Maharashtra has 720 km long coastline which is 10% of India’s coastline. The State
has five districts along the coastl-ine which comprise of 2 major ports and 48 non-major
ports. MbPT (Mumbai Port Trust) located in Mumbai and JNPT (Jawaharlal Nehru Port
Trust) in Raigad district are the two major ports in the state. The cargo is handled
by about 20 non-major ports. JNPT is the largest container port in India while MbPt
is natural deep-water harbour of 400 sq. kms.
JNPT and MbPT account for thee largest share of exports-imports and trans-shipment
in the country. MbPT with 18,700 emplo-yees is the biggest employer among the major
ports in India. Maharashtra Ports showed a strong positive growth in its performance
in the year 2009-10. The State collectively handled the maximum traffic in India.
Maharashtra with two major ports, JNPT and MbPT provide the largest port facilities
in India and together handle a major share of export-import activities in India.
Maharashtra handled the maximum container traffic in India in 2009-10. The State
handled second largest Petroleum, Oil, & Lub-ricants (POL) cargo in India in 2009-10.
